Can Coconut Water Help Prevent Kidney Stones?

Coconut water is the clear liquid found inside young coconuts. According to experts, it possesses several nutrients and vitamins thus making it a nutritious drink option. This tropical beverage has been around for centuries and was found to provide numerous health benefits (1).

Coconut Water And Kidney Stones

Kidney stones can be quite painful and are often a result of not drinking enough fluids. It is formed from too many chemicals that are found in our urine such as uric acid, oxalic acid, calcium, carbonates, cysteine, phosphates, ammonium, and magnesium. Among these chemicals, calcium constitutes a large percentage of the stones that are formed. So how can coconut water help? It dissolves kidney stones by diluting our urine so that chemicals in our kidneys (calcium, phosphates, uric acid, etc.) can easily be flushed out of our system (2,3).

This medicinal tonic also contains potassium which plays a key role in urine alkalizing and preventing the formation of kidney stones (4).

Results of a study showed that coconut water given to rats with kidney stones had prevented crystals from sticking to the kidneys and other parts of the urinary tract. In addition to this, experts also found that that it was able to reduce the number of crystals formed in the urine (5).

A study reported that of 1,670 patients who have chronic reoccurrence of kidney stones within a ten-year period, only 13% continued producing kidney stones when on coconut water therapy. And of that 13%, all patients passed small and relatively painless stones (6).

Other Health Benefits Of Coconut Water

May reduce blood pressure – Due to its impressive 600 mg of potassium in 8 ounces (240 ml), it may help lower blood pressure in people with high or normal blood pressure (7).

May help with diabetes – Coconut water contains zero levels of sugar and is a low-calorie drink with a number of nutrients that can help control increased appetite. Aside from this, it also effectively absorbs glucose and prevents it from entering the bloodstream (8).

Contains some nutrients for fetal development – Coconut meat contains potassium, magnesium, and calcium needed by a growing baby’s development. Magnesium supplementation has been associated with increased birth weight and reduced risk of preeclampsia while calcium is essential for bone and teeth development (9).
