Dill For Digestive Health

Dill For Digestive Health

Dill is a feathery green herb well-known in European and Asian cuisines because of its invigorating aromatic fragrance and citrusy flavor. It is packed with healthful nutrients that provide incredible health benefits. Some of its beneficial components are vitamins A (for healthy vision, skin, immune function, growth, and reproductive health) and C (an antioxidant that helps our body to resist infection), calcium for healthy bones, riboflavin for cell function and development, manganese, and iron (1). This commonly-used annual herb is considered a magic weapon and medicine when it comes to a number of digestive problems including loss of appetite and intestinal gas (flatulence) as well as liver diseases and gallbladder complaints (2).

It is not only a potent appetizer. Its leaves possess excellent digestive qualities. It is loaded with fiber which decreases our chance of constipation. In addition to this, it has an antacid property that helps prevent excessive acids formation in our stomach thus promoting better absorption of nutrients in the body and treating indigestion, ulcer, and gastritis (3).

The fresh and dried leaves of this culinary spice are used as carminative, stomachic, and antispasmodic. A carminative may help force the gas downward through the digestive tract and allow it to leave the body in a safe way. Because of this, they are used for the prevention and treatment of diseases and disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, kidney, and urinary tract; and spasms and sleep disorders (4,5).

How To Enjoy The Benefits Of Dill

We can pour 1 cup just-boiled water over 1 teaspoon ground dill seeds and let sit for 10-15 minutes. Strain and then drink before or after meals.

Simply eat 1/2 teaspoon of dill seeds after any meal. Mix with an equal amount of fennel seeds if desired.

Add one tablespoon of each Dill and fennel seeds to one cup of boiling water. Reduce the water level to half (½ cup). Let it cool down. Drink 2-3 tablespoons of this water after the meals.

Freshly chopped and sauteed dill are used in soups, salads, or as a vegetable.

Use dill seeds in pickles, pickled vegetables, salad dressings and salads, a variety of vegetables, soups, and fish sauces. We can also use it to add more flavor to spicy dishes.
